In 1999 I was working at the Odeon cinema and became friends with the projectionist. He would sometimes let a couple of us go up in our lunch breaks and help load. Holding an entire film, hundreds of people's hard work, in our grubby little teenage hands, really struck a chord and so began my dream to, one day, write an idea and commit it to physical celluloid. This is it.
You can’t fully appreciate the fear of only having 9 minutes on 6 rolls of film, until you’re stood in the most overly-shootable space with the most overly-shootable talents wearing the most overly-shootable wardrobe.
Pas De Deux (Step of Two) is a celebration of collaborations, whilst also being a film about two people who are bound by their craft… A love letter to dance and how it truly transcends language, but still communicates real emotions. I wanted to show the raw diligence and hard graft that goes into creating something so elegant and moving, so we built visuals towards a single moment of human connection, a whispering of words, an exchange that the audience will never fully understand.
In this not so brave-new-world, I hope this isn’t the last time I get to shoot on 35mm film, but if it is, I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to do it alongside.
